Cung Le has his own toy

August
13

I recently had the opportunity to talk with Strikeforce middleweight champion Cung Le. Cung has spent the better portion of the last year and a half healing injuries and starring in movies. Aside from gaining championship gold and starring on the big screen, Le can add another feature to his resume. He now has his own toy.

Round 5 is releasing a MMA figurine of Cung Le. Cung joins Matt Serra, Gina Carano, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua and Dan Henderson in series 4 of MMA collectible figures.

Round 5 President Damon Lau couldn’t be happier about releasing a Cung Le toy. “Cung Le’s popularity across a wide range of audiences made him an ideal partner for Round 5.  Besides his international following in MMA and kick boxing, his growing movie career is gaining him a new set of fans.  He was very involved in the process of creating his figurine, and we think the finished product reflects the hard work he put into it.”

I asked Cung a couple of questions regarding the process:

Q: Did you ever expect that you would get your own toy?

A: No, this was a big surprise to me. I just feel blessed and thankful that I am part of the Round 5 action figure.

Q: How does the process work? How do you go about getting the toy to look like you?

A: You take a lot of pictures. 360 degrees worth of pictures.  You have to hold your pose for awhile. They take shots of your hair, your nose, and the back of your head. They put it all together. They give you samples of moldings and then you approve of it, and the next hing you know you have your action figure.
Q: Do you get the final say of how the action figure looks or is it a collaborative effort?

A: It’s a collaborative effort between both parties, my stuff and round 5.

Cung Le has two figurines available right now. One is the standard series four figure and then there is a limited edition figurine with yellow shorts. The standard figurine can be found here and the limited edition model here.

Cung Le plays “Manh” in the upcoming movie “Pandorum”. The movie is being released September 18th.

Adding some pizazz to my Round 5 figurines

August
11

When I was at the UFC 100 fan expo, the Title MMA booth was giving away little packages. The package included a magazine, an energy shot, and a muay thai kick pad key chain. I immediately thought that the key chain would be the perfect size to fit one of my Round 5 figurines.

A couple of weeks later, I attended the NY MMA expo in Uniondale, NY. A booth at that expo had a Title boxing heavy bag key chain. The wheels really started turning at this point. The Matt Hughes figurine I have is a perfect fit for the muay thai pad. It actually looks more like a kicking shield if you consider aspect ratio to a real life person, but, hey, you get the point. Randy Couture has his hands perfectly poised to hit the heavy bag, so he will be bag training for a while.

Here is the final result. I need to acquire some more Round 5 MMA toys and some extra Title Boxing/MMA key chains to complete my newly formed Inside the Octagon desktop MMA gym and fitness center.

Shogun, Carano, Cung Le, and Dan Henderson are getting their own toys

April
22

Just got this press release. This is probably going to be my favorite series to date, mainly because Gina Carano is getting her own toy.

Dan Henderson, Cung Le, “Shogun” Rua, Matt Serra Join Round 5 for Expanded “Series 4” July Release

Four Champions Plus Carano, Fedor to Comprise Six-Figurine Set; Series 3 Now Scheduled for Late May Release
MARKHAM, Ontario, Canada, April 22, 2009 – Four of the most popular and accomplished champions in mixed martial arts, Dan Henderson, Cung Le, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua and Matt Serra, have partnered with Round 5, the leading producer of MMA collectibles, to create figurines that will be included in an expanded Series 4, it was announced today by Barron Lau, Round 5 CEO and co-founder and Damon Lau, president and co-founder.  The series, scheduled to be available at retail in July in time for UFC 100, will include the four plus fellow superstars Fedor Emelianenko and Gina Carano.

Round 5 also confirmed today that Series 3, which features Andrei “The Pit Bull” Arlovski, “Big John” McCarthy, Frank Mir and Antonio Rodrigo “Minotauro” Nogueira, will be in stores across North America and at online outlets including www.Round5MMA.com in late May, about a month behind its original schedule.

“With six figurines, Series 4 will be our largest issuance to date,” said Damon Lau.  “Adding four more of the biggest names in the sport – with wide fan bases – to what began as an already stacked set is huge for Round 5 and a great opportunity for fans to quickly add to their collections.”

To date, Round 5 has issued two Series of four athletes each:   Randy Couture, Matt Hughes, Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson and Tito Ortiz comprised Series 1 while Rich Franklin, Sean Sherk, Anderson Silva and Wanderlei Silva were released in Series 2.  Series 3 had been planned for an April release, but has been delayed by about four weeks.

“The Series 3 prototypes have been completed and are currently in production,” said Lau.  “It took a little longer than we had originally anticipated, but we feel that the finished product is well worth the extra wait.”

Henderson, the last man to hold the welterweight and middleweight titles for PRIDE, has a 24-7-0 career MMA record, competing against many of the best in MMA.  “Hollywood” defeated Wanderlei Silva to take his final PRIDE crown, then rejoined the UFC, where he has won his last two bouts.  He leads Team USA in Season 9 of The Ultimate Fighter television program and will fight fellow coach Michael Bisping at UFC 100 on July 11 in Las Vegas.

Though he has competed for years in the Chinese martial art of Sanshou, the South Vietnamese native Le gained fame in North America by defeating legendary Frank Shamrock via TKO last year in San Jose, Calif., where he trains.  Le is unbeaten (6-0) in his MMA career and has begun a career in acting, with several feature films nearing international release.

The Brazilian star Rua, known the world over as “Shogun,” boasts and 18-3 record, last week recording a first-round knockout over Chuck Liddell at UFC 97.  He is a former PRIDE champion, winning the Grand Prix title in 2005 with wins over Quinton Jackson, Rogerio Minotoro Nogueira and Ricardo Arona.

Serra, a Long Island, N.Y., native, has compiled a 9-5 MMA mark, earning  international acclaim following his first-round TKO of Georges St. Pierre in their first meeting in 2007 for the UFC welterweight championship.  St. Pierre won the rematch last year, and Serra is next scheduled to battle Matt Hughes at UFC 98 in May.  A Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu master, Serra also gained fame as the winner of Season 4 of The Ultimate Fighter.

Round 5 collectible figures may be purchased at leading retailers such as Toys ‘R’ Us, FYE, Century Martial Arts, Sunrise Records, The Treadmill Factory and Hatashita International.  Other retailers can be found at www.round5mma.com/wheretobuy.php.

Sean Sherk has his own toy

November
18

I recently had the chance to Sean Sherk. One of the topics we discussed was his Series 2 Round 5 MMA figurine that hits stores this week.

Q: What was your initial reaction when you found out that Round 5 wanted to make a Sean Sherk toy?
A: I was pretty excited about it, you know? It’s something that I guess you kind of dream about. I was definitely excited about it.

Q: Do you get to play any role in the sculpting process? Did you have to go in and get any type of mold or something like that?
A: Yeah, well we took some pictures and stuff here right in my gym; a couple of different poses. Then we kind of just decided what pose we were going to use. I have been a part of the process from the beginning basically, since the first sculpting came out to where it is now. It’s been quite a long process, but it’s been a lot of fun.

Q: Do you get final input on how the toy looks?
A: They give me final input pretty much. They send me the sculptures and the up to date sculptures and ask me what I think, or if there is anything that I want changed. It basically just comes down to me, and that has been the fun part about it. I have been part of the process since the beginning.

Q: Were your sponsors happy that they were able to have a presence on the shorts of the toy?
A: I definitely used the action figure to help sell some sponsors for myself. Those guys that are on there are definitely stoked about it.

Q: Do you have to do any toy signings or publicity ?
A: That I don’t know. It comes out next week and I imagine they will probably want us to do something for it, but we haven’t got to that stuff yet.

Q: Do you have a lot of nieces and nephews that are getting “Muscle Shark” toys for Christmas this year?
A: (laughs) I would probably think so. I’ve got 16 nieces and nephews and I imagine they will probably all get one.
