Spike TV will be showcasing some of the rising stars in the UFC with the first ever “UFC Fight Night” from Tampa, FL,
Spike TV’s live “UFC Fight Night” will emanate from the USF Sun Dome in Tampa, Fl. on Saturday, February 7 from 9:00 – 11:00 PM, ET/PT. Also appearing on the fight card will be Mac Danzig (“The Ultimate Fighter 6” champion) and undefeated heavyweight Cain Velasquez.
Cain Velasquez looks to spoil the debut of UFC newcomer Denis “The Menace” Stojnic. Velasquez (4-0), with an impressive pedigree as a two-Time All-American wrestler at Arizona State University, is anything but one dimensional inside of the Octagon. One of the most explosive strikers in the UFC, Velasquez has been dominant in compiling an undefeated record. In fact, none of his bouts have lasted more than one round with all four ending via TKO due to strikes. Looking to end Velasquez’s winning streak is Stojnic (5-1), a heavyweight hailing from Sarajevo who has had similar success on the European mixed martial arts circuit.
I recently had the opportunity to speak with Velasquez:
LVJ: You’ve won all of your fights by TKO. I know you come from a wrestling background. Do you have a specific game plan going into this fight?
CV: It all depends on where the fight goes and how his style is. If he pushes forward hard and gets aggressive then I really don’t want to stand and bang with him just for that reason. We both could be throwing shots and both could be getting hit, so I definitely want to turn the corner on him.
LVJ: Do you think you hold an advantage of Stojnic being that you already have two fights in the UFC and this is his first?
CV: Possibly. I’ve seen his fights before. He does have experience. He has fought in some big crowds but there’s nothing like fighting in the UFC .
LVJ: Being that you are a heavyweight, do you worry about your weight coming into a fight or do you try to hover around the same weight all the time?
CV: I usually stay around the same weight. I usually come in lighter then what I want. I usually come in around 235 but I’d like to be around 240 and keep my weight up.
LVJ: Do you train exclusively with AKA or do you travel around and train with different camps like some other fighters do?
CV: I don’t travel around. I train at AKA. People are usually traveling around and coming to us.
LVJ: If you get past Stojnic, where do you think that puts you in the heavyweight division? That will give you three wins in the UFC.
CV: I have no idea. I will be ready for whoever they give me, whether its someone in the top five or the top ten. That is for sure.
LVJ: You are probably interested in the outcome of the Mir and Lesnar fight. What do you think is going to happen this time around?
CV: I think Brock will be ready for all the leg lock stuff and the jiu jitsu stuff. I don’t really know, but I do see Brock getting better in every fight. I think we will see a better Brock then we have before, that is for sure. He is a tough guy.
LVJ: Thanks for taking the time out to call me, and good luck in your fight.
CV: Thank you.
