After watching the WEC event from last night, I came to the realization that the WEC is one of the most entertaining American mixed martial arts promotions in the world today. The fights are consistently entertaining, and a majority of the fights are ending by knockout or submission.
So I decided to take a look at the three major American MMA promotions that are consistently running shows that are on networks that are readily available to the most American MMA fans. I originally planned on writing about how WEC is blowing the competition out of the water when it comes to fighters finishing fights, but the results I found were pretty surprising.
I took a look at the last four fight cards that the UFC, WEC, and EliteXC and made some calculations. Here goes:
Ultimate Fighting Championship

UFC – Fight Night – 7/19/2008
UFC 86 – Jackson vs. Griffin – 7/5/2008
UFC – TUF Finale – 6/21/2008
UFC 85 – Bedlam – 6/7/2008
41 total fights
27 fights finished by knockout or submission
65% of total fights finished
World Extreme Cagefighting

WEC 35 – World Extreme Cagefighting 35 – 8/3/2008
WEC 34 – Sacramento – 6/1/2008
WEC 33 – Back To Vegas – 3/26/2008
WEC 32 – Albuquerque – 2/13/2008
41 total fights
30 fights finished by knockout or submission
73% of total fights finished
EliteXC

EliteXC – Unfinished Business – 7/26/2008
EliteXC – The Return of the King – 6/14/2008
EliteXC – Primetime – 5/31/2008
EliteXC – ShoXC – 4/5/2008
45 total fights
39 fights finished by knockout or submission
86% of total fights finished
What does this mean? Seems like match makers are doing a pretty good job at making sure mixed martial arts fans are staying entertained. Let’s hope that fights are consistently finished at the same rate that we have been seeing in the past 4-7 weeks.
