After 3 card changes, Rashad Evans withdraws from UFC 85

May

After a whirlwind of injuries and changes in opponents, Rashad Evans has officially dropped off of UFC 85.

The card originally looked like this:

– Rashad Evans vs. Thiago Silva – a fight I was really looking forward to.
– Chuck Liddell vs Mauricio “Shogun” Rua

Shogun withdraws from the bout with Liddell due to injury, leaving Liddell without and opponent. A few days later, the UFC announces that Rashad Evans will not be fighting Thiago Silva and will replace Mauricio “Shogun” Rua.

New Card:
– Chuck Liddell vs. Rashad Evans
– Thiago Silva vs TBA

A few weeks later, Chuck Liddell blows his hamstring pretty badly and has to withdraw from the bout; now Rashad has no opponent. I don’t know why the UFC didn’t put Silva and Evans back on the card, but they chose not to.

Enter, “Sandman”. James Irvin steps in to face Rashad Evans. A new opponent is named for Thiago Silva and his fight is bumped up to UFC 84.

New Card
– Rashad Evans vs. James “Sandman” Irvin
– Thiago Silva vs. Antonio Mendes

A few days ago, James Irvin had to bow out of the fight with Rashad Evans due to a broken foot.

It was rumored that Luiz Arthur Cane would step in for the Irvin, but Rashad Evans has decided not to fight at UFC 85. I can’t say I blame him. After training for 3 different opponents, I’d be pretty frustrated if I had to switch my training camp strategies for a fourth time.

sucks for rashad, but if he were a more exciting fighter, he’d still be on the card.

Yeah, Rashad isn’t the most entertaining fighter. The reason I was looking forward to Thiago vs Rashad is because I thought Thiago could give him his first loss.
