Leonard Shapiro is an idiot

March
19

After perusing some mixed martial arts stories today, I came across this gem by Leonard Shapiro.

It’s plain and simple. This guy is a moron. Shapiro is just another disgruntled sports writer who has had the “misfortune” of being told to write an article about mixed martial arts. Why are you writing about it? Because it’s popular, it’s legit, and people want to read about the sport. Deal with it, and at least have enough sense to report accurately.

As I read each paragraph in disgust, I am debunking every false statement he writes. I am thinking of how I will have to disprove another grumpy old man about how mixed martial arts is no longer “human cock fighting”.

Luckily for me, Mark Cuban beat me to the punch – no pun intended. Cuban has become a HUGE ambassador to MMA. Check out Mark’s rebuttal to this unifiormed, disgruntled sports writer here.

I find it pretty funny when Cuban takes a little stab at Shapiro:

Nor do I have any idea what ” Special to washingtonpost.com” means. Does it mean that this is exclusive to the newspaper’s website ? My guess is that in this case it actually describes Mr Shapiro’s reduced faculties and no one wants to use a pejorative adjective. Hence the use of the word “special”.

I was thinking the same thing as I read his article. Thank you Mark.

Surprise, surprise. An old dude who works for a dying industry (sorry Larry, but it’s true) doesn’t understand the appeal of a hugely popular, relatively new sport and tries to paint it as barbaric because he heard from some guy, who heard from some other guy, that the sport was “rough” when it started more than a decade ago.

Notice how Shapiro doesn’t even claim to have watched any matches before dismissing the entire thing as “reprehensible.” Then he compares it to Roman gladiatorial matches involving lions, which is kind of like how people who argue politics on the Internet like to invoke Hitler. You’re right on—this guy is an idiot.

DC – Thanks for your continued contribution towards this blog. I appreciate your comments.

Also – agreed about the industry, but I’m an online guy :) we are here to stay for a while.

Heh, no offense meant about the industry thing. I hear you guys are doing quite well, as opposed to WaPo and similar papers. It’s tough out there.

And thank you for the awesome blog…you and Sherdog are my two regular stops for MMA news.
